10-13-11 George Strait is an American country singer born may 18, 1952. George Strait is known as the “King of Country” as well as a living legend. George Strait is widely known for his unique style of western swing, honky-tonk style, and fresh traditional county western music. George Strait was born in Poteet, Texas and grew up in Pearsall, Texas. George Strait began playing in a rock band in high school but later switched to country. After high school George Strait enrolled at Texas State University but dropped out and married his high school sweetheart in Mexico. He soon enlisted in the army and was stationed in Hawaii. While there, George Strait began to play with an Army sponsored band. George Strait was honorably discharged from the army in 1975 and returned to Southwest Texas State University, graduating in 1979 with an agriculture degree. While in college, George Strait joined the Ace in the Hole Band. George Strait was later signed with the band as his backup/touring band. George Strait has won CMA entertainer of the year in 1989 and 1990 and ACM entertainer of the year in 1990. George Strait has been nominated for more CMA awards than any other artist and is also a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. As of 2008, George Strait hold the record for the most Number One Hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts with forty-three.
